Recognize & Identify - Medication Overdoses and Patient Care

This course was created for the new PA, NP or doctor who needs to understand the basics of toxicology; whether it's in the ER, primary care or urgent care. It consists of multiple case scenarios going over the most common medical toxicology, accidental exposure, or overdose presentations encountered in these care settings. Our Master Clinicians educator has designed this bootcamp course to train providers of all levels so they can apply the information right away.

Topics Covered in the

Course

  • Recognize frequently involved substances in overdose cases, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and illicit substances.

  • Explain the physiological mechanisms underlying overdoses of commonly prescribed medications, such as salicylates and opioids.

  • Differentiate between benign and life-threatening overdose symptoms through clinical evaluation and diagnostic testing.

  • Apply appropriate initial management steps, including airway protection, vital sign stabilization, and consideration of antidotes like naloxone.

  • Determine the indications and methods for gastrointestinal decontamination, such as activated charcoal and gastric lavage, based on the timing and nature of the overdose.
