Recognize high-risk orthopedic injuries that may be subtle on initial presentation, such as scapholunate dissociation, navicular stress fractures, Lisfranc injuries, and tibial plateau fractures.
Differentiate between acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, using focused physical exams (e.g., FABER, FADIR, hook test, log roll) and appropriate imaging strategies.
Identify key complications associated with missed or mismanaged injuries, including avascular necrosis, adhesive capsulitis, and deformities like boutonnière and swan neck.
Implement appropriate initial management and disposition plans, including immobilization, activity modification, pain management, and timely referral to orthopedics.
Understand when and how to use durable medical equipment (DME) safely, while recognizing the potential harms of unnecessary immobilization in conditions like adhesive capsulitis.
