Breastfeeding education is often lacking in medical education and training programs.
Speakers: Dr. Lauren Macaluso, Dr. Lena Edelstein and Dr. Jessica Cohn
Topics Covered in the
Webinar Series
Primary care providers are commonly presented with breastfeeding challenges at newborn visits and weight checks, yet may not be equipped with the tools and/or time to provide the necessary lactation support during this critical period. The advice given to families during their first pediatrician visit can have a profound effect on the course of their breastfeeding journey. The goal of this presentation is to provide education and practical tools for general pediatric providers to bridge families from their newborn visit/weight checks to a breastfeeding medicine and lactation specialist.
Objectives:
Discuss some of the health benefits of breastfeeding to aid providers in counseling families and underscore the importance of prioritizing breastfeeding support during these early visits.
Provide education on the physiology of breastfeeding to allow providers to apply principles of medical decision making to breastfeeding challenges.
Discuss some of the most common breastfeeding problems and strategies to both prevent and treat them.
Recognize risk factors for breastfeeding difficulties to tailor counseling and referral to a a breastfeeding and lactation specialist
