Urology Curveballs


  • Assessment of urological conditions including uncomplicated UTIs, recurrent UTIs, and hydronephrosis

  • Diagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria, pelvic pain and urinary symptoms in women, urethral diverticulum, and epididymitis

  • Atypical causes of urinary frequency, and different causes and complications in men and women

  • Communication with urologists and improvement of patient care


Pediatric Curveballs


  • Atypical pediatric presentations and atypical conditions that are not often seen in the urgent care setting, such as imperforate hymen, hemolytic uremic syndrome, Seymour fracture, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, pneumococcal meningitis, methemoglobinemia, orbital cellulitis, otomycosis, and genital infections

  • Approaches to diagnosing and treating these conditions, including the need for referral to other medical providers


Common and Not so Common Neurologic Presentations


  • Signs and symptoms of neurological presentations and assessment methods to narrow the differential diagnosis

  • Management strategies of atypical presentations and conditions, including B12 deficiencies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), myasthenia gravis, and multiple sclerosis

  • Risk factors for tick-borne diseases and co-infection

  • Strategies for determining the organism that has caused the disease and applying targeted care, and methods for differentiating tick-borne disease from other disease processes

  • Review and management of tick-borne diseases, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Colorado tick fever, ehrlichiosis, Heartland and Bourbon virus diseases, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Rickettsia Parkeri rickettsiosis, and tick-borne relapsing fever

  • Atypical back pain presentations, such as cauda equina syndrome, spinal epidural hematoma, and spinal epidural abscess

  • High-risk causes of back pain that may present non-specifically as well as red flags
