Doc, I want a Z-Pack! How many times have we heard this? As clinicians, we want to make our patients happy but we also know we cant indiscriminately prescribe antibiotics. With growing antibiotic resistance and the CDC looking closer at this issue, what do you do? Learn from our Urgent Care Master Clinicians Mentor about appropriate indications to antibiotics, what to say to patient, keeping antibiotic stewardship while maintaining high patient experience.
Topics Covered in the
Lecture
Antibiotics Resistance is Growing!
The majority of the causes for URI, bronchitis and pharyngitis are viral. Recent studies shows that Urgent Care Clinicians overprescribed antibiotics for a majority of these cases. Furthermore, the wrong antibiotics are often prescribed for the wrong diagnosis. When we try to push back against patients demand for inappropriate use of antibiotic, our patient experience scores drop.
So what do we do?
Dr. Frank Illuzzi is part of the CDC Action Committee on Antibiotic Stewardship and shares his insight on what to do in these various case scenarios how some clinicians who can achieve high patient experience score and still prescribe appropriately.
