Improve your proficiency in the fundamentals of common medical emergencies as an advanced practice provider.
This curriculum is designed to enhance the APP’s ability to manage emergent conditions and procedures that are often seen in emergency medicine—you will identify risk factors and use clinical clues to initiate appropriate diagnostic workups and employ timely treatment and tailored therapeutic strategies. Utilize this course to improve your patient care in the setting of abdominal pain, chest trauma, hematological and oncological emergencies, genitourinary conditions, and emergencies related to obstetrics and gynecology. This course includes 6.75 hours of video content, downloadable pdfs of the slides, and a pre- and post-course quiz to test your knowledge.

Abdominal Emergencies Part 1: The Acute Abdomen
Anatomy of the abdominal cavity and key component of the history for patients presenting with abdominal pain
Acute abdominal complaints based on the location of presenting pain
Pediatric abdominal emergencies
Abdominal Emergencies Part 2: Abdominal Trauma, Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Diarrhea & Vomiting
Blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma, including diaphragmatic injury, hollow-viscus injury, and solid-organ injury
Upper versus lower gastrointestinal bleeding presentations, including peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, esophageal varices, diverticulosis, angiodysplasia, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease
Causes of vomiting and diarrhea
Chest Trauma
Anatomy in the chest cavity and associated injuries based on mechanism
Blunt chest trauma and low- and high-energy penetrating chest trauma
Identify injuries associated with penetrating chest trauma
Proper workup and management of common chest wall injuries
Hematological & Oncological Emergencies
Neutropenic fever, superior vena cava syndrome, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and vaso-occlusive crises in patients with sickle cell anemia
Tumor lysis syndrome and hypercalcemia of malignancy
Obstetrical & Gynecological Emergencies
Early changes in pregnancy, including key markers of fetal development and maternal health
First-trimester bleeding caused by ectopic pregnancies, spontaneous abortion, and placental complications
Pregnancy-induced hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and eclampsia
Stages of labor and labor progression
Complications that may arise during labor and delivery
Renal & Genitourinary Emergencies
Acute renal failure, acute renal colic, pyelonephritis, renal abscess
Testicular torsion, epididymitis, prostatitis, balanitis, phimosis, paraphimosis, Fournier's gangrene, and priapism
